 Why I like teaching art...

Art is fun.

  • We get to do projects like clay, paint, printing, papermaking - things many students have never done before, or only in grade school.

  • Students can improve their drawing skills. Some students tell me "I can't draw." I believe anyone can learn to draw if they work at it.

  • We look at wonderful examples of artwork and creativity - from history, from famous artists, in music videos, in the world around us. We're surrounded by art!

Art can help you in your life.
  • Students who participate in good arts programs do better in school and better on standardized tests.

  • Art activities build your manual dexterity - your ability to do complex tasks with your hands.

  • Art strengthens your skills in visual observation - learning to see is half of learning to draw, but it's also important for success in many other fields and life in general.

  • Art class builds communication skills - how to say what you want to say, how to understand what others are saying.

  • Art builds brain skills of concentration and focus. Just like athletes and musicians, in art class we strive to "Get in the ZONE".
