Words We'll Use
- Analysis: Thinking and talking about the parts of an artwork, and how they work
together to make the artwork successful.

- Asymmetrical: A type of balance where elements are arranged differently on
each side of an imaginary midline.

- Criticism: Discussing or writing about an artwork - What gives it power?
What makes it beautiful? Criticism can be positive or negative.

- Decoration: Visual elements added to make something more attractive or fashionable.

- Design: Verb - to design is to plan an artwork. Noun - a design is the plan for an artwork.

- Elements of Art: The components we can analyze in an artwork: line, value, space, texture,
shape/form and color.

- Fire: To heat clay or glaze in a kiln so that it melts and changes physical properties.

- Frisket: A rubbery liguid or a sticky film that an artist uses to keep paint off of certain areas in the artwork.

- Glaze: A powdery paint that is used on ceramic art. When it is fired, it melts and becomes like glass.

- Kiln: An oven for firing ceramics - it can reach temperatures of 2000 degrees and higher.

- Line: The path or mark made by a tool, instrument, or medium as it moves across an area.

- Mandala: A circular design (symbolizing the universe).

- Shape (2D)/ Form (3D): Something distinguished from its surroundings by its color, outline, edge, or surface.

- Space: An element of art that is the area in and around objects in a composition.

- Style: An artist's special way of creating art; the style of an artwork helps determine how it is different from other artworks.

- Symmetrical/Symmetry: A type of balance in which elements are arranged the same on each side of an imaginary line.

- Texture: The way an object feels or looks like it feels.

- Glue down small pieces of cut construction paper to make a detailed repetitive decorative pattern on a sheet of black construction paper.

Homework/Makeup Work
- Tesselations -
Use the Internet to research how to create a tesselation and then create one of your own.

- Make drawings of some of the decorative patterns around your house.
Look at wall papers, dishes, fabrics, frames and other wood trim items.
Draw each pattern (in color if possible) on a separate sheet of paper, and tell me (label) where you found each pattern.
