     Words We'll Use 

    • Abstract: An artwork that is not a recognizable picture of something - it depends on shapes, colors, etc to convey its meaning.

    • Balance: Parts of a picture arranged so that areas seem to have equal visual weight.

    • Composition: Organization of elements in an artwork.

    • Concept: An idea.

    • Content: The meaning of an image, beyond its obvious subject matter, Includes the emotional, intellectual, symbolic, thematic, and narrative meanings.

    • Critical thinking: Careful analysis before forming an opinion.

    • Emphasis: Using any strategy to draw attention to a certain element in the artwork.

    • Expression: Conveying ideas, feelings, and meanings through art (visual, written, music, dance, etc).

    • Gesture: The motion within an object, body, or artwork.

    • Imagination: Creating a mental picture of something that is unlike things one has seen.

    • Intuitive: Instinctive knowledge or feeling.

    • Movement: The direction or flow in artwork.

    • Pattern: Using an element or combination of elements in a planned repetition.

    • Unity: Having all parts look as if they belong together.

    • Variety: Differences or changes in a composition that add interest.

    • Gesture drawings -
      Find someone who is willing to pose for you. Draw 10 full-page gesture drawings, capturing the movement and energy of the pose. You may draw pets in still poses for up to 4 of your drawings.
