     Words We'll Use 

    • Design process: The process used by most artists and designers to create artwork or designs. Includes: study the problem; brainstorm and sketch solutions; experiment, sketch, or test ideas; select the best solution and sketch in more detail; produce the final artwork or design.

    • Experimentation: To search out by trial.

    • Felting: The process of making non-woven fabric from fibers through the application of heat, moisture and pressure.

    • Mosaic: Artwork created from small bits of paper, tile, glass, etc. placed to create large images or areas of color.

    • Organic: Any living or natural shape that is not geometric.

    • Paper-mache: Paper pulp mixed with wheat paste and molded into three-dimensional forms.

    • Paper Making: The process of creating paper using water, fibers, or recycled papers.

    • Process: Progressive course, a series of changes, a method of creating.

    • Pulp: The fibers from cloth, wood, or other sources that is used to make paper.

    • Relief: Artwork that uses the third dimension but is clearly created on a flat surface. Artwork that sticks up a little from the flat surface.

    • Quilting: The process of making art using two or more layers of fabric that are then stitched in a pattern through all the layers.

    • Score: In paper sculpture, to crease using a semi-sharp object for easy folding; in clay, to slash or cut before joining pieces.

    • Stitchery: Artwork made by using a needle and thread or yarn to create a design.

    • Technique: A special way to create artwork, often by following a step-by-step procedure.

    • Texture: An element of art that is the way an object feels or looks like it feels.

    • Weaving: A process and product created by interlacing strands of material.

     Homework/Makeup Work 

    • Collect paper samples -
      Start with grocery bags, newspaper, notebook paper, cardboard, toilet paper, paper towel, etc. Then look for fancy and decorative papers. Cut a 2"x2" square of each paper and arrange them in a pattern of 4 samples by 4 samples (16 paper samples in all).

    • Research -
      Read about the environmental impacts of paper in modern society. Read about recycling of paper, bleaching of paper, disposal of waste paper. Write a brief (1 page) summary of the most interesting things you found out.
