     Words We'll Use 

    • Aesthetics: The study or theory of the beautiful, in taste or art.

    • Ceramics: Functional and decorative objects made from clay.

    • Clay: A pliable natural earth.

    • Context: A set of interrelated conditions (such as social, economic, political) in visual arts that influence and give meaning to the development and reception of thoughts, ideas, or concepts, and that define specific cultures and eras.

    • Craft: Skill in handwork or the arts, or, an occupation requiring manual dexterity.

    • Dexterity: The ability to do detailed, careful, exacting work.

    • Kiln: An oven for firing clay objects. Can get hotter than 2000 degrees.

    • Medium/Media: Materials used to create an image.

    • Perceptual Awareness: Visual and sensory awareness. Being alert to what you see, hear, feel, taste. Noticing the details of things.

    • Portfolio: A collection of papers, files, photos or drawings that represent a person's work.

    • Symbol: An image, sign, or element, such as color, that is understood, by convention or context, to suggest some other meaning.
